WHAT IS EBUFFS?

Urban farmers and gardeners in the East Bay supply a significant portion of fresh fruits and vegetables to the region’s low-income residents. These farmers must solve problems such as soil remediation, fertility and pest management, as well as distribution and marketing.

Over the past two years farmers from a dozen East Bay organizations have been addressing these needs together through an innovative and cooperative training network called East Bay Urban Farmer Field Schools—EBUFFS.

Monthly workshops at different participating farms are guided but flexible, addressing technical skills, community building, and leadership development. In our pilot phase, we also learned to organize for engagement and commitment of individuals and organizations.

Themes in our peer-learning workshops are technical but also benefit from frank and honest exchanges between participants grounded in EBUFFS’ core principles of diversity, equality, anti-oppression, ecological sustainability and food sovereignty. EBUFFS creates an environment that cultivates trust, confidence and community leadership with men and women of underserved communities.

In 2016 the Center for Popular Research, Education and Policy (C-PREP) will conduct the EBUFFS program for urban farmers—and the communities they serve.

We greatly appreciate the generosity of the Clarence Heller Foundation in funding EBUFFS with a grant to Food First. And we appreciate the confidence shown by Food First in selecting C-PREP to coordinate the program with assistance from Urban Tilth.
